Creature Keepers: Amateur Entomology Kit

Creating a fun yet sophisticated brand for creepy crawly creatures was the main goal for this project in packaging design. I was tasked with coming up with a brand in rigid packaging with several different tailored compartments for different items. I came up with Creature Keepers, a brand dedicated to oddities and professions/hobbies like entomology. Creature Keepers Bug Box is a subscription based service where subscribers receive different preserved insects from across the world for pinning and displaying. It was inspired by my partner's interest in entomology as a hobby and their difficulty finding insects for pinning during the winter months. Other science related subscription services like KiwiCo already exist but none dabbled specifically in subjects like entomology that are more niche or adult oriented.

The Bug Box is crafted as a subscription box honoring the humble insect by pinning expired specimens of bugs. The project example acts as the initial box a subscriber receives including tools, pins, pinning boards, directions and three different insects for pinning. The box opens as a book would with a tray insert containing the insects and tools on top and directions and pinning boards held underneath. The design features a collection of insect motifs on each part of the packaging and a color palette inspired by the included insects in the kit. The greatest difficulty was including all of the necessary information for bug pinning in the smallest possible package. Directions needed to be included in addition to information about each insect in order to clearly convey how to complete the activity and learn more about the insects of the world at the same time.
