Overbrook School for the Blind

Project Type

Branding

Date

Fall 2022

This project is a redesign of Overbrook School for the Blind, a state-funded special needs school located just outside of Philadelphia that serves visually impaired individuals and their families from early childhood through adulthood. The current school branding felt out of date and rigid despite the school’s fun-loving energy and enthusiasm for giving vision impaired individuals the tools they need to thrive. New branding aims be more visually appealing for caregivers and individuals with some sight, and more inclusive of those with visual impairments including use of large lettering, hyperlegible fonts, and tactile or braille-friendly printed media.

My redesign sought to bring energy back into Overbrook’s outward reflection, creating a more approachable institution for new students. I chose a hyperlegible font to be used in all school materials as well as a high contrast color palette in an attempt to make the brand as accessible as possible. The colors selected have strong contrast from one another and adapt to the most common form of colorblindness. Refreshed graphic element motifs are based on braille, including the new logo referencing the letter "O" in braille and rounded graphic shapes.

All printed or produced materials for Overbrook are highly tactile, utilizing different textures and appropriate thickness for braille to be used when necessary. Post cards and promotional mail will come in a standard edition with font sizes legible for sighted caregivers and a vision impaired edition with larger font sizes and higher contrast color combinations. Overbrook School for the Blind has a printed quarterly newsletter called "Towers" which is redesigned to be more visually appealing for caregivers and family members and create a solid source for donors to reference to see what Overbrook does every day.
